Meemure is a sleepy little village surrounded by the ever green lushes of knuckles mountains range. For a nature lover who is seeking for an authentic village experience, the best ever destination to travel is Meemure ancient village.
Though this village meant to be ancient, it’s still alive giving home to about 100 families. Giving spectacular scenery of misty mountains, the village is located in Central province near the border between Kandy district and Matale district in Knuckles mountain range. Its approximately 7 hour drive from Colombo. One can access to the village from Kandy – Mahinyanganaya road turning from Hunnasgiriya junction. The journey makes one and half hour drive for a distance of 29 km. the nearest Police station is Ududumbara.
Currently the village is easy to access and one can drive by a vehicle of their own or there have the facility to purchase all inclusive travel packages from trip organizers. You will be given a vehicle for both to pick and drop off. The most easy and convenient way to travel to the village is to purchase a package. It’s much worthy to have a guide (specially a village lad) to explore more places around the village. The huge rock kissing the sky- Lakegala is the first scenery contact to your eye once you enter to the village and it’s like a giant protecting the village. Travellers can trek around the village enjoying the sightseeing of the area.
The journey to Meemure is to be one of your best ever travel experience since it has an authentic village culture which absorbs in to your veins. Most of the people are so elderly (there is an old primary school for kids as well) carrying their live hood mainly on the cultivation. Everywhere is greenish paddy fields and crops of ginger, pepper and cardamom. The fertility of their soil is witnessed by the well grown crops and absolutely the village is a prosperous land area. The authenticity is still remaining in this village; the elderly villagers still use most traditional methods for cultivation. It’s a common view to see herds of buffaloes alone the fields as these people make use of animals mainly in cultivation and animal husbandry. People are so innocent and calm living their lives so simply. Foods are fresh from crops and they cultivate for themselves. Do not forget to taste traditional Sri Lankan dishes made in this village and for sure you will be mesmerized by the delight.
Places to visit in Meemure
Meemure village is filled with picturesque waterfalls, natural pools where you can slip to the water. One can have a hiking experience in Lakegala, but it’s another whole day journey.
The must visit Gurugoda Ella is falling towards the village from a higher elevation. This could be shown as another breathtaking place to visit. The Crystal clear water falling down to make a natural pool makes everyone fascinated to visit. It is advisable to be very careful or even not to visit to this waterfall in rainy season due to the high level and speed of water.
This water flows across the village making fascinating water pools and there is a specific place where there is a slipping rock. You can slip downward to fall in to the pool. Down from there, the river makes another waterfall where you can jump in to the water from the top of the waterfall. Make sure you are wearing life jackets before trying the water sports.
It is a heaven to a nature lover and the village is a best place for one who is interested in eco-tourism as well. The feeling cannot be expressed and you will be overwhelmed for sure. Visit this ancient village and enjoy the spirit of authenticity but don’t forget, keep your foot prints only. Protect the nature.
